Friend group cycles from Southwold to Southwell to raise funds for Breast Cancer Now

A group of 35 riders completed a 200-mile cycle challenge for charity.

The group rode from Southwold to Southwell in three days and raised £52,673 for Breast Cancer Now.

Last week, the organisers Steven and Paula Routledge from Caunton and Tim and Rachel Hinchley from Oxton presented a cheque to the charity.

Over the last 14 years, they have organised five bike rides and four balls and raised over £350,000 for the breast cancer charity.

The friend group first started raising funds for charity in honour of their close friend Katie Taylor who died in 2012 at the age of 37.

However, throughout the years, and with Katie still in their minds, it expanded to support other friends from the friend group who had been affected by breast cancer.

"None of us are athletes that is for sure, but we always have a good time and knowing that we are making a difference adds to it,” said Paula Routledge.

She added: “Besides being to a good cause you get to spend time with your friends and when do you actually have the time to spend three days with your friends if not when cycling for charity?”

The Breast Institute based at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, City Hospital, was the first to benefit from the group’s fundraising which resulted in the provision of the Breast Screening van based at Newark Hospital.

The funds raised over the 14 years were mainly used to buy pieces of equipment but the cycle challenge was the first time since they started fundraising that will support research.
