Alejandro Garnacho reacts as Kobbie Mainoo lands first senior England call up

Manchester United wonderkid Kobbie Mainoo is celebrating a major milestone after landing his first ever senior England call-up.

Gareth Southgate had seen enough. After trying to hold back and keep Kobbie Mainoo back with the England under-21s, the midfielder’s sensational performance against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-final has seemed to turn the tide.

Ian Wright had labelled Mainoo’s performance ‘immense’ and demanded he be called up, and the former Arsenal forward’s comments seemed to be reflected in Southgate’s final verdict.

There were no injury drop-outs, Mainoo was simply added, told to report to the senior squad when he arrived for training with the under-21s.

United fans divided over Mainoo…

Let me provide my perspective for a moment… I am pleased for Kobbie Mainoo, but not thrilled at all that he has been called up.

When has a call into the England squad been beneficial to any young Manchester United player?

He has played a large number of games since recovering from injury and he should be getting a break, if not now, then this summer.

Instead of heading to Euro 2024, I would much rather see Mainoo resting up, and let the England chips fall as they may.

Keep him fresh for pre-season, ready to go again in 2024/25, where another long season lies ahead, with increased expectations.

Manchester United players thrilled for him…

If there is a sense of trepidation about Mainoo’s England call-up, it is not being reflected among his colleagues.

Kobbie Mainoo posted to social media to celebrate his recognition, and was inundated with messages from colleagues past and present.

First team pal Alejandro Garnacho issued a quick response, writing: “My man!”

Former United prospect Teden Mengi sent a message writing: “My guy man, proud”.

Countless more messages from his United academy colleagues followed, who are now looking up at Mainoo as a big inspiration.
