Premier League reveal Atletico Madrid launched bid to sign £42m player before he joined Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur were able to beat Atletico Madrid to the signing of a 22-year-old in the summer transfer window.

A number of new faces have come through the doors since Ange Postecoglou’s arrival in the summer.

And one of those summer signings has now seen his name thrown into the spotlight recently amid Nottingham’s Forest’s financial breaches.

Brennan Johnson joined Spurs last summer for £47.5m, but he could’ve moved earlier in the window to La Liga.

Atletico Madrid’s interest in Brennan Johnson

On Monday, Forest were deducted four points as their financial breaches case came to a close.

One of the club’s arguments was they were holding out later in last summer’s window for a bigger bid for the Welshman.

Which they received in the end from Spurs. And a new Premier League report has revealed Atletico Madrid lodged a £42m bid to sign the 22-year-old.

With this bid batted away by Forest, Johnson then went on to sign with the Lilywhites on deadline day back in the summer.

What Heung-min Son said about Johnson

After a fairly slow start since making the move to north London, the Welshman has shown some positive signs recently.

The game on the weekend was one to forget and even saw some suggest he was not good enough to be starting for Spurs.

However, it was a game for all in navy to forget with even Heung-min Son leaving a lot to be desired out on the pitch.

Johnson has returned four goals and six assists in the Premier League this season; three of those goals coming since the end of January.

But he is still an extremely young player and needs time to continue his development under Postecoglou.

It is apparent those at the club are liking what they are seeing from him with his captain recently showing his admiration for Johnson.

“I love this guy. And I just want to help him as much as I can. Even when we started the game, I just told him, just make sure you’re ready,” Son said after the game against Crystal Palace.

“You’re going to make the difference when you come on, so that’s what we need.”

Spurs will be hoping for a quick return to form from the 22-year-old after a poor display at Craven Cottage.

And he may have the chance to do so against Luton Town at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when Spurs return from the international break.
