Spurs reportedly want £30m midfielder who's his league's leader in winning possession in the final third

Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked with a player who is now the Premier League’s leader in winning possession in the final third of the pitch.

Speculation linking Spurs and Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher has been doing the rounds a lot in recent months, and speculation is likely to intensify going into the summer transfer window.

For instance, journalist Dean Jones told GiveMeSport a month ago that the 24-year-old is the ‘dream’ signing for Tottenham at number eight.

More recently, The Athletic‘s David Ornstein speculated that Spurs could well try their luck again for Gallagher, a player they have tried to sign before.

It’s quite surprising that Chelsea would even consider selling the England international, considering how much of an impact he has been making at the west London club.

Gallagher is superb with the ball at his feet, can have a real impact in the final third and has shown he can do the dirty work in the middle of the park too.

Tottenham target Conor Gallagher is league leader in winning possession in final third

Now, Squawka has put together a thread on X highlighting each of the Premier League leaders in a number of metrics, and the reported Spurs target is listed twice.

Gallagher has won possession in the opposition’s final third the most out of any player in the English top division, with a tally of 34.

Interestingly, he has also committed the most fouls in the division, with a tally of 58. That is perhaps not as good a statistic, but it does highlight his tenacity.

Not only is Gallagher a top talent who’d certainly do a great job at Spurs, but his price tag may not even be that high.

GiveMeSport recently claimed that Chelsea insiders think they won’t receive any offers over £30million for Gallagher in the upcoming window after he enters the final year of his contract.

It’ll be interesting to see whether Tottenham draw up a concrete plan to launch a bid in the summer.
