Man found guilty in baseball bat beating death that led to 7-hour standoff with cops

A man has been convicted by a jury in a homicide at a South Jersey home that led to a seven-hour standoff with police in 2022.

Larry Brown, 29, of Burlington Township, stood accused of beating 34-year-old Cecilio Luciano to death with a baseball bat at a home in Beverly before barricading himself in the residence with a woman and four children.

The jury deliberated for three days before convicting Brown of murder, multiple counts of kidnapping, endangering the welfare of a child, multiple weapons offenses and terroristic threats, the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office said.

A woman called police on June 14, 2022, around 1:15 a.m., reporting that Brown had went to a home on Bentley Avenue in Beverly, killed a man and was still in the house with the residents — a woman and four children, officials said. The caller said that someone else inside the residence had told her the information.

When police arrived, Brown refused to exit the home and crisis negotiators were called to the scene. Brown eventually came outside and surrendered to authorities at around 8:30 a.m. The woman and children were not harmed, officials said.

The body of Luciano was found inside the home and an autopsy later found that he had been beaten with a baseball bat, authorities said.

Brown’s sentencing is scheduled for May 10.
