The attorney who exposed the romance between Georgia DA Fani Willis and her hired prosecutor Nathan Wade is appalled that Willis spoke at a church and suggested Jesus chose her to prosecute Donald Trump, her client and over a dozen others in the racketeering election subversion case.

“When someone says that Jesus himself told them to prosecute this case, how do you defend against that?" Ashleigh Merchant said during an appearance on Megyn Kelly's show that was reported by The New York Post.

"That’s insane. I’ve never dealt with that… Nobody says this. This doesn’t happen. People don’t take to the pulpit."

Back on Jan. 14, Willis spoke before the congregation at Atlanta’s oldest Black church, Big Bethel AME, a day before Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, calling her position as a prosecutor a "God-given assignment".

“With that kind of support, we will move mountains and do Jesus’s will, doubling all the way," she said. "So his flawed, hard-headed and imperfect child has a message for each of you today. Please find a way to do your extraordinary, God-given assignment and make this community and the world a better place for all of his people."

Merchant, who represents a former Trump operative Michael Roman, revealed the romance between Willis and Wade in a lawsuit claiming it necessitated Willis be removed from the case.

The Fulton County election interference case was forced to take a backseat as an ethics hearing took place to determine if Willis had committed misconduct in spending public monies during the relationship.

Judge Scott McAfee eventually ruled that Willis could remain as prosecutor if Wade left the case.

McAfee concluded that there was an "appearance of impropriety" involved in Willis' romance.

McAfee also called into question Willis’ church speech as being “legally improper” and threatened to gag her from speaking publicly about the case moving forward.
