Report: 41-year-old that Liverpool squad want as next manager is favourite for Jordan Henderson's Ajax

Liverpool will be hard at work trying to find a replacement for Jurgen Klopp ahead of the German’s exit at the end of the season – assistant Pep Ljinders is a contender to take over from his superior.

Ljinders, 41, has only ever managed Eredivisie side NEC Nijmegen in his career, but he did win 11 games in 22. He has since worked as an assistant manager, six years in the dugout as Klopp‘s right-hand man.

Plenty have been linked with the Liverpool role. Xabi Alonso is the clear and obvious choice with the Spaniard impressing as Bayer Leverkusen manager. Alex Grimaldo is hopeful Alonso remains at Bayer.

Lens boss Franck Haise, Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi and plenty more are being linked. But so is Klopp’s assistant Ljinders – with claims that he is the man the Liverpool squad want to take over from Klopp.

The situation with Ljinders and Liverpool as Ajax very interested

Like Liverpool, Ajax are on the lookout for a new manager. The Dutch side are enduring a dismal season, with manager John van ‘t Schip only at Ajax on an interim basis until the end of the current campaign.

Give Me Sport say Ljinders is favourite to go in at Jordan Henderson’s Ajax and turn the ship around. Henderson of course, joined Ajax from Al-Ettifaq in January, signing a deal until the summer of 2026.

Earlier reports say Ljinders would not take the Liverpool job out of loyalty to Klopp – but GMS now say that Ljinders could hold off on a move to The Netherlands with Ajax, in case Liverpool make their move.

It is unclear what will happen with Ljinders, given he has a contract until the summer of 2026. But, if Ljinders is not targeted as Klopp’s replacement – it does look as if he will be off, with Ajax very keen.
