'We have been planning': Club director now confident of keeping 'wonderful' Liverpool manager target

Xabi Alonso is first choice for Liverpool as The Reds scour the market to find a replacement for Jurgen Klopp – and Bayer Leverkusen director Fernando Carro has commented on Alonso’s future.

Klopp‘s announcement shook football, when he confirmed that he would be leaving Anfield come the end of the season. But as the dust settles, Liverpool have been left with the need for a new manager.

As Klopp fights for the Premier League title and potentially, the Europa League, the Reds scouting department will be looking for his replacement. Alex Grimaldo hopes his manager does not leave Bayer.

Alonso is not the only manager that Liverpool are being linked with. Even his assistant in Pep Ljinders is a possibility – though he is a favourite for Ajax. Alonso played for Liverpool 210 times in league and cup.

Speaking to BILD this week, Bayer director Carro discussed the future of Alonso as manager amid his links over a romantic return to Anfield in the coming months. He says you never know what will happen.

“He has a contract until 2026 and there is no reason to doubt that he will stay here. In football you never know what will happen. But I have a lot of trust, we have a very good relationship. I’m very relaxed.”

What else has been reported about Xabi Alonso and Liverpool

Reports claim that Liverpool have already spoken to Alonso’s agent about a move to bring him to The Reds this summer. Steve McManaman said Alonso would be a “wonderful” appointment for Liverpool.

But, Fabrizio Romano claims Bayern Munich already boast an advantage in the race to get Alonso – with the German club’s set-up in place. Alonso’s focus right now is likely to be on the German title race.

Liverpool though will not want a drawn-out saga and will be hoping to get a deal over the line for a new manager before the window starts, in order to prevent starting on the back foot. News expected shortly.
