Report: Newcastle keen to sign 'outstanding' PL player who has blown Jamie Carragher away this season

Newcastle United are looking at bringing in a new defender this summer and may have already identified their top target.

Despite being one of the best last season, Newcastle’s defence has been leaking goals this season having shipped nine more than Everton who are at risk of relegation.

A new report from The Daily Mail claims that Newcastle have set their sights on Nottingham Forest defender Murillo as the club face serious financial problems.

Club may be forced to sell defender Newcastle want this summer

Forest have just received a four-point deduction for breaking the Premier League’s financial rules when they first won promotion, and now they are just one point above the bottom three heading into the final run in.

This may force them to sell some of their star players in the summer to help their financial situation out, and Murillo is already attracting a lot of interest from some huge European clubs.

Newcastle certainly have their work cut out for them with PSG and Barcelona also believed to be watching the 21-year-old who only joined the Midlands club last summer for around £15m.

It’s not quite clear how much Newcastle would have to pay for the Brazilian defender, but his impressive start to life in England will have certainly raised the price tag for Forest who will be looking to make as much profit on him as possible.

Carragher thinks Newcastle target has been ‘outstanding’

Murillo has already impressed at St James’ Park when his side took home all three points in a 3-1 win on Boxing Day with Chris Wood netting a hat-trick against his former team.

In the game, the 21-year-old made two blocks, seven clearances, completed six passes into the final third and grabbed an assist for one of Wood’s goals with a perfectly timed ball over Newcastle’s defence.

Even the likes of Jamie Carragher have been taking notice of Murillo’s performance as the former Liverpool captain claimed that he’s been ‘outstanding‘ for Forest this season.

Eddie Howe will certainly be looking at all of his options to improve the defence next season, but Murillo looks to have a strong case with his Premier League experience and age on his side.
