Alan Shearer says one player Arsenal signed for £8m in the past was 'ridiculously good

Alan Shearer has now been providing something of a throwback praising an iconic Arsenal player of the past who he loved to watch play.

A Premier League or Champions League trophy would definitely be a welcome start this season, even if Arsenal would have to overcome some monstrous opposition to reach that feat.

But given their form right now, and the quality of their squad which is also now recovering players from injury, there’s definitely reason to believe they can.

That being said, it was certainly a lot easier to win trophies in the era when the likes of Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira were around.

However, when speaking on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast, it was a different former Arsenal player that Alan Shearer was praising.

The pundit, who knew a thing or two about being a successful forward, was recalling the brilliance of Dennis Bergkamp, saying he was one of the best foreign players to ever play in the Premier League.

Speaking on the podcast with Gary Lineker, Shearer said there wouldn’t be too many opposition players arguing otherwise.

He stated: “He was just a brilliant player. I don’t think you would get many people arguing how brilliant Dennis Bergkamp was, even opposing players, he was ridiculously good.

“I think we did the top 10 foreign players in Match of the Day top 10, but for me he is one of the top five we have ever seen in the Premier League without a doubt.”

Lineker then added: “He is a wonderful footballer and he had an edge as well.”

Of course, Bergkamp was the sort of profile that we are unfortunately unlikely to see too often again in today’s game.

The £8m-forward had a maverick quality about his game, similar to a player like Eric Catona, if not just a little less controversial.

Bergkamp is surely an Arsenal player that Shearer would have loved to have played alongside if he could have his time again.

And it really is a compliment that some have compared Kai Havertz’s unique skill-set to Bergkamp’s since he arrived in north London.

The German definitely has a way to go to match what he achieved at Arsenal, but he’s certainly made a good start.

All that considered, Arsenal should perhaps now be pursuing their next big Dutch success story.
