36 goals this season… The one signing Chelsea really should have made in January - opinion

Chelsea went through the January transfer window somehow not completing a single permanent signing.

This pales in comparison to their efforts a year prior, when they smashed their club record fee at the time to bring in Enzo Fernandez off the back of his sensational World Cup campaign.

Complimenting this with the addition of the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Benoit Badiashile, they looked to address their squad under Graham Potter with quality for the future.

Fast forward to 2024 though, the most exciting deals saw the likes of Armando Broja and David Datro Fofanajoin fellow Premier League sides on a temporary basis.

However, there is one player who continues to remind them every single week that they should have made a move in January to bring him in.

Chelsea should have signed Gyokeres

Viktor Gyokeres’ hat-trick in his last game took him to a ridiculous total of 36 in all competition for his club this season.

Adding to his 14 assists, he has become one of the most sought after strikers in Europe despite it being just his first season in a big European league.

It was claimed during the January transfer window that he was one of the top targets on Chelsea’s list for potential strikers to come in.

Arsenal now want Gyokeres

They ended up not making a move for anyone though, and have had to rely on Nicolas Jackson predominantly for the goals up top this season.

While his overall performances have actually been very impressive this season, it remains to be seen if he can be the regular goalscorer the club need.

With Arsenal now reportedly also interested in his services, and them able to offer him Champions League football, it feels unlikely the Blues would be able to convince him to join them if it came down to it over the summer.
