Sheffield Wednesday could now be in trouble after relegation rival's recent announcement - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday could now be in trouble because of one of their relegation rival’s recent appointment.

Despite sitting a point from safety at the bottom of the Championship table, Sheffield Wednesday still look like one of the most likely teams to avoid relegation around them.

Rotherham United have all but confirmed their place in League One next season, while the likes of Huddersfield Town, Birmingham City, QPR, Stoke, Plymouth, Blackburn and Millwall all remain in battle.

While they did lose back-to-back games against Leeds United and Ipswich, the Owls are still one of the most in-form teams towards the bottom of the table, while Rotherham and Birmingham are currently struggling the most.

With the Blues sat outside of the bottom three on goal difference, Danny Rohl‘s side will have been confident of leapfrogging them across the final eight games of the campaign.

However, Birmingham confirmed yesterday that Gary Rowett would take temporary charge of the club in Tony Mowbray’s absence, which could spell bad news for Sheffield Wednesday.

The Midlands outfit had been without Mowbray for a month now and they have since lost five of their previous six games, picking up one draw against Hull City.

Rowett will now be tasked with keeping Birmingham in the Championship, which could be a massive blow for the Owls given his success at St Andrews last time.

Who will be punished by Gary Rowett’s appointment?

The 50-year-old guided the Blues from 21st to 10th during the 2014/15 campaign, but was eventually sacked following Birmingham’s change of board in 2016, despite leading them to seventh place.

Rowett completely turned things around at Birmingham and was a fan favourite, while he will be desperate to pick up where he left off almost eight years on.

The coach hasn’t done too badly since either, taking Derby County to second place the following year, as well as just missing out on the play-offs with Millwall.

While it is terrible news that Mowbray will be away for the rest of the season, Birmingham supporters will feel they are in safe hands under Rowett, while it just gives the Owls a bit more of a challenge in the relegation scrap.

Sheffield Wednesday won’t be the only club concerned by Rowett’s appointment though, and there are other sides that should be a lot more worried than they are.

Blackburn haven’t won a game in over a month, while Plymouth and Huddersfield both have one win in their last five games.

With many of the relegation rivals still set to face off this term, it’s really going to be a fight to the death in the Championship.
