Newcastle now have their golden chance to sign £42.5m star this summer, Toon staff really like him - opinion

Profit and sustainability is proving to be a big issue for Newcastle United, but it is something that could also help them in the summer transfer market.

While Newcastle United have managed to stay the right side of the line so far, that is not the case for some of their Premier League rivals.

Everton were the first team to be punished for breaching PSR, and now Nottingham Forest have suffered a similar fate. They have been docked four points, and are now in the bottom three of the Premier League.

But the issues might not stop there. According to the Times, Nottingham Forest are at risk of receiving another points deduction next season if they do not make £30million worth of profit before the end of June. Therefore, they now need to agree to sell at least one of their top stars shortly after the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.

That is bad news for Forest, but it could create an opportunity for Newcastle United.

Newcastle United wanted Morgan Gibbs-White in January

During the January transfer window, Newcastle were linked with signing Morgan Gibbs-White from Forest. He was identified as a possible replacement for Miguel Almiron, who had the chance to move to Saudi Arabia.

Bringing in Gibbs-White was a tantalising option for Toon fans, but a deal never became a reality. Almiron did not leave St James’ Park, meaning the Magpies did not have the funds available to sign the £42.5million man.

It is a shame, as he would have been the perfect signing at the time. Newcastle needed an extra body in midfield, as well as someone who can operate out wide. Gibbs-White’s versatility meant he could have filled all of those roles, but he remained at the City Ground.

Newcastle have chance to reignite interest in Gibbs-White

However, he is a player who Newcastle staff really like, and you have to imagine the club will be looking at him again this summer. And they might suddenly be even more keen knowing that Forest need to sell.

With nine goal contributions this season in a struggling Forest side, the 24-year-old looks ideal for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle squad. He is a great runner with the ball, while he has the versatility that the manager craves.

Gibbs-White is someone who should be on Newcastle United’s transfer radar this summer, and a deal before the end of June has to be on the Magpies’ agenda following the latest news coming out of Nottingham Forest.
