Three players Sunderland should pounce on if they get relegated, including 18-goal gem - opinion

Here are three players who could be relegated from the Championship this season and should be chased up by Sunderland.

Despite Sunderland‘s horrific form as of late and supporters’ major concerns, the likelihood of the club actually getting relegated is extremely low.

The Black Cats currently sit 12th in the Championship table – nine points above the drop and 13 points from the play-off positions.

In what feels like a rather pointless couple of months coming up, there is no doubt that Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Kristjaan Speakman are working hard to make plans for the summer.

As well as finding a new manager, Sunderland will be eager to delve into the transfer market and rebuild our struggling squad – while we could also face losing a number of assets to Premier League clubs.

While we may have tens of millions from Jack Clarke’s impending exit, the Wearside outfit could also benefit from looking to the clubs that could get relegated this season, as they may have some special players eager to remain in the second tier.

Here are three players who could be relegated that Sunderland could try to sign…

Michal Helik

Michal Helik joined Huddersfield Town from Barnsley in 2022 and has been a key part of their defence ever since.

The 28-year-old has been one of very few positives for the Terriers this term, and not just for his ability at the back.

The 6 ft 2 centre-back is also currently their top scorer and could well end the campaign on double figures, having already netted nine goals in the Championship.

Sunderland have struggled for much height in recent years and could also benefit from his ability from set pieces at both ends of the pitch.

Morgan Whittaker

Morgan Whittaker is definitely an ambitious one, but there wouldn’t be a much better replacement for Jack Clarke than this man.

In fact, Lazio had the same idea when they tried to sign the Plymouth star after we turned their bid for Clarke down in January.

Whittaker has netted an impressive 18 goals and provided seven assists in the Championship this season, despite the Pilgrims being in a relegation battle recently.

Like Clarke, Whittaker has improved massively since being promoted from League One and is definitely unlikely to drop back down if they are relegated.

The 23-year-old would definitely cost a fair whack, but seems like a pretty safe purchase if we are looking for someone to add the goals that would be missing in Clarke’s absence.

Sinclair Armstrong

Sinclair Armstrong was one of the most exciting aspects of Sunderland’s 0-0 draw with QPR at the weekend, despite coming on after the hour mark.

The striker – who has three goals and three assists this season – looked very strong and pacey, creating QPR’s best chances and managing four shots, despite only having eight touches.

QPR are eager to get Armstrong tied down to a new contract, however he has also attracted interest from the likes of Celtic and Crystal Palace, so could be a tough one to land.
