Owls icon & 42 y/o: Three out-of-work managers Sheffield Wednesday could hire if Rohl leaves - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday have unearthed a coaching gem in Danny Rohl.

In what is his first managerial job, Rohl is thoroughly impressing at Sheffield Wednesday.

His predecessor Xisco Munoz left without a single win to his name as Owls boss. But in 30 games in charge now, Rohl has 12 wins to his name.

He’s given Sheffield Wednesday a definite prayer in the fight for survival this season with the Owls just a point from safety despite back-to-back defeats.

But there’s Championship interest in Rohl ahead of the summer and if Sheffield Wednesday are relegated, it’ll surely see Rohl move on.

With that in mind, here are three out-of-work managers Wednesday could instantly hire in the summer…

Alex Neil

Former Norwich City, Preston North End, Sunderland, and Stoke City boss Alex Neil is another Championship promotion-winner, doing so with Norwich in 2015.

More recently, the 42-year-old guided Sunderland to promotion from League One in 2022 and then set them up for an eventual play-off finish last time round, very much against the odds.

He couldn’t succeed at Stoke City despite heavy investment last summer and his coaching reputation has no doubt taken a hit.

But Neil remains a very tactical and insightful manager; speaking after games, it’s clear to see Neil’s knowledge of the game and the detail he goes into, and maybe Stoke is something of a poisoned chalice in terms of management.

He’s hugely experienced and he may be eager to get back into management and prove his worth.

Neil also showed with Sunderland that he’s not afraid of dropping down into League One.

Pearson is a name who’ll be well-remembered by Sheffield Wednesday fans.

The 60-year-old spent seven years as a player at Wednesday making 224 total appearances and representing the club in the Premier League, and famously lifting the League Cup in 1991.

He’s since made his name in the dugout as well, best known for his time with Leicester City whom he took from League One to the Premier League in five years.

Pearson was most recently at Bristol City where he steadied the ship following a turbulent spell under Lee Johnson.

The more contemporary Liam Manning is at the club now and he’s struggling to improve the Robins, suggesting that Pearson may be a more tactically-aware boss than most give him credit for.

He won 42 of his 131 games in charge of Bristol City.

Sabri Lamouchi

Frenchman Lamouchi was last with Cardiff City where he oversaw 18 games at the end of last season, winning six of them to eventually keep Cardiff in the Championship.

Despite that, the former Nottingham Forest boss would leave Wales after failing to agree a new deal with the club, and he remains out-of-work.

Lamouchi has developed a reputation for being a very defensive manager; at Forest, that was arguably his downfall, though he proved to be exactly hat Cardiff needed and if the Owls stay in the Championship, but Rohl still leaves, Lamouchi could be the man for Dejphon Chansiri.

Of his six wins at Cardiff, three included clean sheets, beating all the teams around them near the foot of the table when it mattered most.
