Report: £82,000-a-week Nottingham Forest man has now withdrawn from international duty

Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood picked up an injury during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Luton Town. Now, the Reds might have to make do without him for a little while.

Forest drew 1-1 with the Hatters in a relegation six-pointer, with Wood notching his 10th goal of the season in all competitions. The Reds have now slipped below Luton, however, after being deducted four points.

Now, Forest will face an anxious wait to see how Wood is. Some news in the last day or so has seemingly confirmed that the injury sustained is more than just a niggle.

Forest striker Chris Wood pulls out of New Zealand squad

Well, it has to be said that the latest update doesn’t feel like good news from a Forest perspective. Wood is the club’s top goalscorer and with Taiwo Awoniyi out injured, it really is a case of needing the 32-year-old fit.

According to New Zealand outlet Stuff, Wood has now officially withdrawn from the national team. The international captain will now miss the game against Egypt on Friday night.

It’s not clear what Wood has actually done, although it appeared that he was holding his thigh as he left the field at Kenilworth Road. That was the same injury he sustained that ended his campaign last term.

Forest will have everything crossed for good news

Strikers are in short supply at the City Ground. Awoniyi is on the sidelines once again and now it looks as though the £82,000-a-week Wood might be set for a spell out of the Forest team.

That would leave Divock Origi as the only natural striker within the squad. Nuno Espirito Santo played him out wide against Luton, however, and perhaps he’s unfancied through the middle.

It could be a case of needs must, however, when Forest take on Crystal Palace. With the Reds just a point adrift of safety they will want to get back above the dotted line as quickly as possible and put some pressure on the teams above them.

Wood has been integral to Forest this season. Now, all Forest can do is keep everything crossed that he can return to the team quickly and keep scoring goals for the Reds.
