'We've made an offer': Stephen Bettis explains Sheffield United's new recruitment plan with 'offer' made

Sheffield United’s CEO Stephen Bettis has been addressing the change in recruitment policy currently planned at Bramall Lane.

United parted ways with Paul Mitchell a few weeks ago. It comes as Chris Wilder looks to get a grip on things at the club once more after the summer’s signings failed to pay off.

For United, it means moving to another way of working. However, that new way of working won’t included a sporting director or director of football.

Instead, Stephen Bettis has revealed that the plan is to have a new head of recruitment and more bodies underneath that person.

Speaking to Football Heaven tonight (quotes transcribed by The Bladesman), Bettis explained how United plan on moving forward with their recruitment strategy.

“We don’t plan to change from having a head of recruitment. We’ve not felt comfortable about having a director of football or a head of football. We feel if we get the right person in as head of recruitment that that solves it. It will be more data driven than it has been historically and we’ll be adding one or two to that department in terms of data analysis,” Bettis said.

When pressed further on those comments and how quickly the changes might happen, Bettis seemed confident and admitted one offer had already been made.

“They’ll be here. We’ve got a shortlist, we’re talking to various people. We’ve made an offer to one person this week, not a head of recruitment, someone senior within the recruitment department,” Bettis added.

A change was needed after 2023 disaster

Make no mistake, the summer signings at United have been poor in the main.

Paul Heckingbottom was hardly backed to the hilt but what he did go and buy simply hasn’t paid off.

Only Gus Hamer and perhaps Cam Archer at times can say they’ve really contributed. Vini Souza has been a disaster and has caused a stir this week with his comments. Loan signings like Yasser Larouci and Luke Thomas were poor, while Auston Trusty has struggled at the back, while Tom Davies got injured pretty much immediately. And let’s not forget Benie Traore, who lasted five months before being shipped out.

The Blades simply had to make a change and it’s good to see Bettis talk about that change.

This summer is massive for United. There’ll be players leaving and new faces coming in. Those coming in have to be the right fit, otherwise we are back to square one.
