Man United wonderkid moves one step closer to following Kobbie Mainoo

Not for the first time this season, it was the teenage duo who carried Manchester United on their shoulders during that thrilling FA Cup victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Kobbie Mainoo, dancing through Jurgen Klopp’s midfield like Fred Astaire across a ballroom, was so impressive during that 4-3 win that England boss Gareth Southgate wasted no time promoting the 18-year-old to England’s first team squad just 48 hours later.

Alejandro Garnacho, meanwhile, assisted Amad Diallo’s 121 minute decider and played a major role in goals one and two. A constant menace on either flank.

While the present has looked a little gloomy at times during Erik ten Hag’s second season at the helm, the remarkable progress made by Garnacho, Mainoo and record-breaking striker Rasmus Hojlund ensure that a brighter future waits just around the corner.

And with the Manchester Evening News reporting that Shea Lacey is just weeks away from signing his first professional contract with the Red Devils, United may still have the jewel of the Carrington crown to look forward to.

Shea Lacey to sign Manchester United contract

Alongside Mainoo, Lacey is viewed by some as the most exciting young talent to blossom in the club’s prestigious academy during recent times. Comparisons with Phil Foden will come as no surprise to anyone left open-mouthed by those social media clips showing Lacey skip and swivel his way past defenders, the 16-year-old already building up quite the collection of solo goals while playing well above his age group.

‘The similarities between Lacey and Rooney are striking’, wrote GiveMeSport recently, and not just because the England Under-17 international was also born a few miles down the motorway in Liverpool.

Lacey, who has been representing United’s under-18 side since the age of 15, appears to share a young Rooney’s penchant for grabbing a game by the scruff of the neck, fearless up against players far more experienced.

Lacey on course for success

The Manchester Evening News report that, when Lacey turns 17 in April, he will be rewarded with a first professional contract at the Old Trafford outfit.

The report adds that a number of high-profile clubs – from both England and abroad – wanted to sign the twinkle-toed teenager last year, and will likely be disappointed by the sight of Lacey committing his long-term future to the Red Devils.

Lacey also confirmed a few days ago that he will soon make his return from a long-term injury issue.
