Former Celtic striker set to land key recruitment role at Premier League giants

Celtic are currently enjoying some downtime during the international break, though news surrounding the reigning Scottish Premiership champions never ceases.

Brendan Rodgers has a lot more to be positive about following a resounding 3-1 victory over St Johnstone last weekend, where Kyogo Furuhashi, Nicolas Kuhn and James Forrest all got themselves on the scoresheet.

Now, several of his players have descended to all corners of the globe to feature for their respective nations, making up the bulk of the news run surrounding Celtic over the next week or so.

Daizen Maeda was already in action for Japan earlier today and played the entire 90 minutes as the Samurai Blue defeated North Korea in World Cup Asian qualifying by a solitary goal to nil.

Greg Taylor and Anthony Ralston could be involved for Scotland tomorrow evening as they take on the Netherlands at the Johan Cruyff Stadium in Amsterdam.

Away from the run-of-the-mill stuff, news has now come to light involving an ex-Celtic player who is now seemingly on the verge of landing a surprise role at a high-profile Premier League club.

Former Celtic striker Mark Burchill set to land surprise role

Since retiring from football, the 43-year-old has enjoyed roles in coaching and scouting at Livingston, Slovan Bratislava and Bournemouth, where he is now chief scout, per the same outlet.

According to The Times, Bournemouth technical director Richard Hughes is expected to take Burchill to Liverpool with him in a scouting role after confirmation that the former is moving to Anfield, taking over as their new sporting director.

Burchill would join the likes of Barry Hunter and Dave Fallows in the Reds’ recruitment set-up and is seen as another valuable addition amid behind-the-scenes restructure at Premier League giants.

The outlet understands that a deal for the ex-Hoops man is close to being finalised. Intriguingly, when Celtic were involved in negotiations that eventually failed to get Eddie Howe on board as manager in 2021, there were suggestions that Burchill could return to Parkhead in a backroom capacity.

Nevertheless, the Broxburn-born man is now destined for Merseyside as he edges closer to his next career step.
