Bayern first club to be punished for anti-investor fan protests

Bayern Munich are the first club to be penalized by the German Football Federation (DFB) for widespread fan protests which led to the collapse of a Bundesliga investor deal.

Bayern were fined a total of €40,000 ($43,000) for incidents in three separate matches, the DFB said in a statement on Thursday after announcing a standardized approach to sanctioning match delays in the Bundesliga and second tier the previous day.

For weeks earlier this year, fans across the two divisions protested by throwing tennis balls, chocolate coins and other objects onto pitches and several games were held up.

Several clubs had suggested that penalties be waived but the DFB has gone ahead with sanctions.
