"Not the same player": Mateta says 19-year-old Crystal Palace teammate has changed so much

Jean-Philippe Mateta has now claimed that one of his Crystal Palace teammates is no longer the same player.

The 26-year-old made the comments when speaking to Crystal Palace’s official website for a feature interview.

So, who did Jean-Philippe Mateta say has changed a lot at Crystal Palace? Let’s take a look…

Jean-Philippe Mateta praises development of Matheus Franca

Well, the Frenchman revealed that Matheus Franca has made great strides at Selhurst Park since making his Crystal Palace debut back in October.

The Brazil U20 international had to wait for his first appearance after arriving in a £26m deal from Flamengo with a minor injury – while Roy Hodgson also took a while to hand him a chance.

However, the South American’s teammates certainly seem encouraged by his development – if Mateta’s comments are anything to go by.

The Crystal Palace No.14 said: “Matheus is not the same player as when he played his first game. The more you play, the more you have a good rhythm. My advice to the young players is just to play like you train. If you train well, you will do the same on matchday.”

Franca’s Crystal Palace debut was a tough one, as Hodgson threw the 19-year-old on at St James’ Park for the last 20 minutes as the Eagles trailed 4-0 to Newcastle.

The Brazilian’s next appearance came in a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham at Selhurst Park.

Hodgson criticised Franca’s efforts off the bench after that loss, before leaving him on the bench in Crystal Palace’s next six Premier League fixtures.

Crystal Palace No.11 now in a better environment

Thankfully, Franca now seems to have the correct environment to thrive.

Oliver Glasner has already contrasted Hodgson by praising the teenager and opening the door to regular playing time, while he also evidently has the support of teammates such as Mateta.

Joachim Andersen also called for Franca to play more back in January – so the talent from Rio de Janeiro is clearly respected by his colleagues.

Hopefully, the £26m man can show his obvious ability on a regular basis under Glasner.
