M. Emmet Walsh dies aged 88 after incredible six-decade career

Walsh gained his first film role as an extra in Midnight Cowboy, and his first credited role in Alice’s Restaurant in 1969.

Throughout the ’80s and 90’s he starred alongside celebrities including Barbra Streisand in 1972’s What’s Up, Doc? and Harrison Ford in 1982’s Blade Runner, which became the film he was “asked about most” out of the hundreds he had featured in.

In 2017, he told the Hollywood Reporter that he didn’t really understand the movie when he first saw it. “We didn’t know what to say or to think or do! We didn’t know what in the hell we had done! The only one who seemed to get it was Ridley.”

To the younger audience, he’ll be recognized for his roles alongside Cameron Diaz and Julia Roberts in My Best Friend’s Wedding, and Knives Out, alongside Daniel Craig in 2019.

The star’s final movie, Outlaw Posse, was released on March 1, 2024, just weeks before his tragic death.

When asked about his career, the actor said, “I approach each job thinking it might be my last so it better be the best work possible. I want to be remembered as a working actor. I’m being paid for what I’d do for nothing.” (As per Sandy Joseph’s release, via The New York Post.)

Rob Schneider leads tributes for the star

Friends and fans have taken to X, formerly known as Twitter to pay tribute to the star who they’ve known and loved for years.

“One of the finest actors and human beings I have ever known, M Emmet Walsh has passed,” wrote Rob Schneider. “I remember all his wonderful stories and how generous he was with the wisdom and acting knowledge he had accumulated in his 119 movies he made in his career. God bless you, my friend.”

Screenwriter Mark Shostrom penned: “Sad to hear about M. Emmet Walsh. I had the pleasure of working with him for 6 weeks on COURAGE. He needed a haircut first day but nobody had hired a hairstylist. Emmet looked at me and said, ‘H***, just pick up those scissors and start cuttin’. A total pro, a film legend. RIP.”
