Big Edson Alvarez twist, things could be very different now

Edson Alvarez joined West Ham United in the summer, but he’s now made an honest admission about Chelsea.

Chelsea could really do with a player like Edson Alvarez right now – his form for West Ham this season has been superb.

Hammers boss David Moyes is so reliant on the 26-year-old, and with that in mind it is a huge concern that he’ll miss three of our next four games in the Premier League and the Europa League through suspension.

West Ham paid around £30 million plus add-ons to bring the brilliant Mexican midfielder to the London Stadium from Ajax in the summer of 2023.

That transfer fee now looks like an absolute steal, and you can guarantee that plenty of other Premier League clubs now wish that they had beaten us to his signature.

In 25 Premier League outings for the Hammers this season, Alvarez has averaged 2.6 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 2.5 clearances per game. He has made 39.9 passes on average per match and has recorded a completion rate of 86.3% (Who Scored).

Without Edson, we are a completely different team. His coolness and composure in possession enables him to receive the ball from our defenders in tight spaces. He is absolutely crucial to our hopes of playing out from the back.

Without him, we are quite simply not the same team, and we really struggle to move the ball from defence through midfield and on into attack.

However, the Mexican has now made a big admission about Chelsea…

Edson Alvarez makes honest Chelsea admission

The 26-year-old midfielder has been speaking to reporters out in the USA whilst on international duty with Mexico.

He discussed a wide range of topics, including Chelsea wanting to sign him.

And the Hammers star made an admission about our Premier League rivals, when speaking to Caliente TV:

*“In year three \[at Ajax\], I had to go to Chelsea, the plane was waiting for me at the airport – then Ajax told me, ‘You know what: you’re not going’\. Whether people believe it or not, it doesn’t make any difference to me, I’m the one who is here and the one who is living it\. I was an hour away from getting on the plane and going to sign for Chelsea\. Ajax told me: ‘You’re not going’\. So, you’re not leaving, what do you do? There’s no way you’re leaving\.”*

I have to be honest, what worries me about that is how keen he was to join Chelsea from Ajax. If they come knocking for him again, would he be as willing to jump ship?

Don’t get me wrong, I can’t see Edson Alvarez leaving West Ham to join Chelsea this summer, but what about in 2025? He is so vitally important to us, that we really can’t afford to lose him.

Hopefully the West Ham owners match the Mexican’s ambition, and we’re able to keep hold of him for many more years still to come.
