Olympic long jump champion Malaika Mihambo will cope fine if World Athletics decides to radically change the rules, her coach Ulli Knapp said on Friday.

Officials are considering replacing the take-off bar with a zone. The distance will then be measured from the point where the jumper left the ground, although no changes are expected before the Paris Olympics in July and August.

There were many failed attempts in long jump at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest where athletes overstepped the bar.

"Malaika can live well with the old rule and she could do the same with any new rule. She is a jumper who repeatedly had very long jumps and jumps that were close to being invalid," Knapp told dpa.

"Athletics wants to become more attractive, they want to shorten the duration of competitions in the technical disciplines. Compared to the running disciplines, the tension is less attractive to the public."

Germany's Mihambo recently said of the potential new rules: "It's a matter of taste. I could definitely get on board with it."
