'Monitoring': Fabrizio Romano says 25-year-old Liverpool player is now firmly on Real Madrid's radar

Liverpool are playing a dangerous game with some of their top players contract’s starting to run down.

Although they finally have some structure back in place, with Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes coming in to oversee things, they badly need to get a move on here.

All three players with just over a year left on their deals are currently integral to the team. Virgil van Dijk is the captain, Mohamed Salah the top scorer and Trent Alexander-Arnold the team’s second in command and creative hub.

While there have been rumours over Van Dijk and Salah exiting, things have been a little quiet on Trent. But that changed today with an update Liverpool fans have likely been dreading.

Real Madrid monitoring Trent Alexander-Arnold

Journalist Fabrizio Romano took to X on Friday morning to deliver some news that will have made the heart of every Liverpool supporter sink.

“Real Madrid are monitoring Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation at Liverpool,” Romano reports.

“Current deal expires in June ’25 with no talks underway as of now. Liverpool have not indicated any desire to sell at this stage. There’s no indication of player’s views so far.”

This is starting to look precarious for Liverpool. Get this sorted, now.

What’s going on with Alexander-Arnold’s contract

As recently as this week, reports have surfaced that there has been ‘surprise’ over Liverpool allowing Alexander-Arnold to go into the last year of his contract.

At 25, the right-back isn’t even in his peak yet. As one of the best players in the Premier League, his value is incredibly hight.

And yet, Liverpool have somehow sleep-walked into a position where they’re under pressure to keep him.

From a Madrid point of view, you can see why they’d be interested in Trent. They’re on the verge of finally tying up the signing of Kylian Mbappe and already have Jude Bellingham secured and playing incredibly. They’re building some team.

Much was made of Alexander-Arnold’s friendship with Bellingham while Liverpool were trying to woo him last summer. But ironically, perhaps that could now work against the Reds.

Still, it seems unlikely that Real could afford him this summer. Having spent a bomb on Bellingham and with Mbappe to come, there’s surely not too much left in the bank.

Even with a year left on his deal, Liverpool would demand a massive fee for Trent. Nevertheless, they also won’t want to lose him on a free at just 26 next year.

So, a lot here will depend on how Alexander-Arnold feels. Jamie Carragher has previously expressed concern over the No.66’s future and that now feels prescient. Please, Liverpool, this needs to right at the top of the ‘to do’ list.
