Sunderland have made a social media announcement that speaks volumes about the fans - opinion

Sunderland have recently made an announcement on social media that says a lot about the fans.

As far as seasons go, this one looks set to go down as a fairly forgettable one for Sunderland.

The Black Cats are all but out of the race for top six and instead needing a couple of wins to ensure their Championship status for another year.

Mike Dodds‘ side are now winless in their last seven, halting a run of six-straight defeats with a drab, goalless draw vs QPR last time out.

There’s still eight games of the season left to play and the Black Cats have some tough fixtures coming up, including trips to Leeds United and West Brom in April.

Sunderland travel to Leeds United in the Championship

In their last eight games of the campaign, Sunderland face six of the current bottom 12 teams.

It’s a fairly kind run-in and Dodds will be hoping to get a few wins together, finish strong and set the tone for what is hopefully a more positive 2024/25 campaign.

Arguably their toughest fixture will be a Tuesday night trip to Elland Road to face title-chasers Leeds United on April 9th.

Daniel Farke’s side have now overtaken Leicester City on goal difference, though the Foxes have a game in hand, and Ipswich Town in third are just a point behind both teams.

Sunderland sell out Leeds ticket allocation

Tickets for Sunderland’s trip to Elland Road went on sale nine days ago on March 13th.

And on Thursday, the Black Cats announced that tickets for the trip to Yorkshire have sold out, with 2,900 Sunderland fans making the journey to Leeds.

So during a season that looks set to peter out into nothing, with a team that can’t seem to score a goal, let alone win a game, Sunderland fans continue to back their team in numbers.

It speaks volumes about the supporters, especially given the fact that the Leeds game is on a weekday night.

Sunderland fans are among the most passionate and well travelling in the league with their iconic Stadium of Light having the highest average attendance of any team in the Championship this season, welcoming more than 41,000 on average, per game.

And Sunderland travel well on the road; a study earlier in the season showed that Sunderland have the highest average away attendance in the Championship this season, with an average away following of 3,334.

So it’s no surprise that 2,900 tickets for Leeds have been snapped up.

Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and co will also be thankful that they have a set of fans so committed and loyal as well, despite what’s been a season full of mishaps, highs and lows.
