Ibrahima Konate shares why every Liverpool player is ‘apprehensive’ right now

With around two months of the season left, there’s plenty for Liverpool supporters to be excited about.

Sunday’s loss against Manchester United was a bit of a setback in that respect, with the Reds now out of the FA Cup. But they look good to make the Europa League final and are still in the fight for the Premier League.

If they could lift either trophy, it would make for a top end to Jurgen Klopp’s incredible reign as manager at Anfield.

However, beyond that there is a big unknown for Liverpool. And according to defender Ibrahima Konate, it is starting to cause some concern amongst the playing squad.

What has Ibrahima Konate said

Konate has been speaking to French outlet Franceinfo while away with his national team this week. It’s a great interview with Liverpool’s No.5, who reiterates his love for the Reds.

However, when asked about whether Klopp’s departure will change anything for him, he gave a slightly mixed response. It isn’t bad news by any means, but it does point to the ‘apprehensive’ mindset within the camp.

“Liverpool is Liverpool,” responded the 24-year-old. “It was Klopp who came for me and brought me to the level I am at today. It will always remain a mythical, exceptional club.

“Everyone is apprehensive, every player is aware of that. Who will be the new coach, will it go well, collectively and individually?

“Because tomorrow a new coach arrives but for personal reasons, he may not like us. And you can’t stay at the club because you have your career, you have your pleasures.

“After that, there’s not really too much to worry about. Liverpool will get the job done and me with what I’m doing on the pitch today, there’s no reason why it can’t work.”

What’s the latest on Liverpool’s new manager hunt

Liverpool are still yet to find clarity over who will be taking over from Klopp next season. The arrival of Richard Hughes as sporting director looks likely to accelerate plans, though.

As the world knows by now, Xabi Alonso is the man the Reds really want. However, with Alonso wanting to focus on finishing the season with Bayer Leverkusen, little progress appears to have been made.

The end of the season is near though, and both Liverpool and Bayern Munich are going to want a final answer from the Spaniard soon.

As a result, journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported this week that the two clubs will engage in a ‘crazy battle’ for Alonso next month.

If Liverpool win that battle, then hopefully some of the anxiety in the squad will start to dissipate. Obviously, nobody can yet know which players Alonso will rate and which he will not. He will have his own ideas on the squad and will want to implement them.

But for someone like Konate, who has had another excellent season, there shouldn’t be too much to worry about either way. Whoever the manager, he’ll surely be a big part of Liverpool’s XI for years to come.
