Leeds have looked at 'outstanding' defender who Chelsea also want to sign - journalist

Leeds United will already be putting plans in place for the upcoming summer transfer window.

Those behind-the-scenes will need to be prepared for two different scenarios, with it still up in the air what division Leeds will be playing in next season.

If promotion is achieved, excitement will of course build for the sort of player Leeds could look to bring in, and there have already been links to a couple of names in recent weeks.

Fenerbahce striker Michy Batshauyi has been mentioned as a potential target on a free transfer, while Borussia Monchengladbach defender Luca Netz is someone Leeds have also reportedly scouted this season.

With Junior Firpo having just 12 months left on his deal and it unlikely he will be offered a new one, left-back is a position Leeds could look to upgrade, and so Netz would fit that bill.

LeedsUnited.News have spoken to transfer expert Graeme Bailey on Leeds’ reported interest in the 21-year-old, and he says Netz is someone they are looking at, but there could be competition from Chelsea.

Bailey says Leeds have looked at deal for Netz amid Chelsea competition

He said: “Netz is the opposite end of the market. A brilliant young player and it is a market Leeds have looked at before, the German market. They would be willing to look at it again. He is an outstanding player and Leeds would have competition there.

“He is on Chelsea’s radar as they look at potential options to come in. That is the sort of player Leeds will look at. The three strongest squads, Leeds, Leicester and Southampton, if they did all come up, people shouldn’t forget how strong the squads are.

“I think if all three were in the Premier League this year, they would all stay up. I think there would be work to do. The full-back positions are something you are going to look at. It would be interesting in midfield what you do. I don’t think the squad needs major surgery if Leeds go up.”

Netz is well known to Leeds boss Daniel Farke

With Netz currently playing his football at Gladbach, he is well known to Leeds boss Daniel Farke, with the two having worked together during his time as manager last season.

Netz is regarded as one of Europe’s best young talents in his position and if promoted, a move to a Premier League side like Leeds would be the next stage of his development.

Farke spoke frequently on Netz’s potential during his time at Gladbach, and it is clear he rates him highly as a player, which could make him a suitable option.

He said: “Luca is a young guy and already has 50 Bundesliga games under his belt. Nobody doubts that he can play at this level. For him, it’s now about proving that with consistent performances, in every training session and every game.

“He is developing week by week and is putting pressure on Ramy. I am sure that a very good career at Borussia lies ahead of him, but he has to earn the position of being a regular player like everybody else.”
