'I'm told': Journalist says he knows the exact number of names on Liverpool's list of Jurgen Klopp successors

Jurgen Klopp will leave Liverpool in the summer but quite who will replace him remains a mystery.

There has been plenty of talk about Xabi Alonso coming back to Anfield. The Spaniard is doing brilliantly with Bayer Leverkusen and is a wanted man across Europe.

Likewise, Ruben Amorim has also been mentioned after doing well with Sporting Lisbon.

Quite who will take over from Klopp, remains to be seen.

But according to journalist Ben Jacobs, there could well be a few more candidates coming to light as Liverpool go through a strict process of elimination.

Liverpool to consider multiple managers to replace Jurgen Klopp

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Jacobs suggested that Liverpool will have as many as seven managers on their list to replace Klopp.

“I’m told that seven names will be put on a long list, and then three or four on to a shortlist. The whole point of getting Edwards and Hughes by mid-March is so Liverpool can now start the process. Liverpool are aware with Alonso that Bayern are also interested but they’re not concerned by a rival, nor are they going to change their process or the speed at which they work,” Jacobs said.

“We hear a lot of rumours about Bayern already approaching Alonso or Liverpool already offering some kind of deal. That’s not my understanding. Liverpool very much have a rigid process whereby first they get in the executives, then they look at the data, and that helps inform who they want to put on their list.”

Different managers can stake a claim for the Liverpool job

While Xabi Alonso seems to the be favourite among fans and those at Anfield already, the fact remains that his job race is still wide open.

A number of managers will have what they believe are the right credentials to take over from Jurgen Klopp.

The aforementioned Ruben Amorim is one, while others will be in the frame. The likes of Ange Postecoglou have got a mention from some in the media, while even someone like Gary O’Neill, who is doing so well at Wolves, could be in with a shout.

Likewise, Steven Gerrard will always get linked.

Whoever it is, has a huge job on their hands. FSG know they must get this right, or they risk years in the wilderness like we’ve seen with Manchester United.
