Man Utd superstar has now proven Paul Scholes wrong over early season 'selfish' critiques - opinion

Paul Scholes is often outspoken in his opinions of Manchester United, in December this saw him criticise one current star.

Manchester United endured some really poor runs of form in the early months of this season, and this often saw serious criticisms levelled at players.

But more recently things have been better with the likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho really evolving into star players for Erik ten Hag.

But this wasn’t always the case for these youngsters, with one in particular failing to impress Paul Scholes back in December after his performances.

Here’s what he said, and how the teenager has since proved him wrong…

What Paul Scholes said about Alejandro Garnacho

Back in December, as United went crashing out of the Champions League, club legend Paul Scholes dished out some damning criticism of his former side.

The focus of this critique was Antony and Garnacho, with the latter going on to prove the Old Trafford legend wrong with his comments.

“You expect creativity from your wide players, Antony and Garnacho, but they are quite selfish players,” Scholes said.

“They are not players who are looking up, they’re thinking about scoring their own goals, thinking about scoring themselves,” he then added.

This is something Garnacho has worked on as he’s since improved, here’s how.

How Garnacho has proved him wrong since for Manchester United

Garnacho is just 19 and for early chunks of this season, he played like an inexperienced teenager, with poor decision-making frustrating more than just Scholes.

However in recent months and since moving to the right, the Argentina international has grown substantially as a player.

He’s matured on the pitch and is probably the biggest attacking danger at the club right now, on either flank.

His development was most obvious in the 4-3 win over Liverpool last weekend when he assisted the winner, but also played the deciding factor in goals one and two also.

He created five chances in the game, which was a week after his brilliant dribbling won United two penalties in the 2-0 win over Everton.

He’s really come of age this season and we can’t wait to see how many more levels he has to go in his career. Serious talent who’s vital to United’s future.
