Report: Liverpool already trying to sign £60m midfielder, they could push even harder next month

With a new sporting director now secured, Liverpool are casting their eyes towards the summer transfer market.

It’s set to be an important off-season for the Reds – their first without Jurgen Klopp since 2015. And although Richard Hughes comes with a stellar reputation, he certainly has plenty of work to do.

A lot of that work will be to do with securing the futures of a number of key players. With Real Madrid reportedly monitoring the situation of Trent Alexander-Arnold, for example, Hughes needs to hit the ground running.

Of course though, the biggest remit for the former Bournemouth man is to bring in the right players to strengthen the new manager’s squad. And with that in mind, Liverpool are claimed to be already on the hunt for a potential new midfielder.

Liverpool eyeing summer business

Having seemingly been very happy with their quartet of signings last summer, it’s arguable whether Liverpool need a new midfielder this year.

However, it looks likely that Thiago Alcantara will leave, meaning the Reds might want to make sure they’re sufficiently covered.

In that case, one who could well be considered is Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners. The Dutchman has been linked with Liverpool in the past and is now seemingly on their radar again.

At least that’s according to Italian outlet Calciomercato, who claim that the Reds have already made some steps towards signing Koopmeiners.

What’s the latest on Teun Koopmeiners

Koopmeiners has made some headlines this week after publicly claiming that he’s keen to leave Atalanta this summer.

Having even gone as far as saying that he’s looking for a move to England in particular, it looks likely that the 26-year-old will be on the move.

And according to Calciomercato, that move could well be to Liverpool. They claim that the Reds have already ‘asked about’ the potential addition of Koopmeiners.

Furthermore, Liverpool could reportedly push further to sign the Netherlands international next month. The Reds meet Atalanta in the Europa League quarter-final and it’s said that this could be ideal timing for Liverpool to ‘seize the opportunity’ and start negotiations.

From the Italian side’s point of view, they are claimed to be unhappy with Koopmeiners recent comments in the press. It’s said that his public determination to leave could subsequently lower his value.

Nevertheless, Atalanta are reportedly looking for a minimum of £60m to sell Koopmeiners. It’s claimed that they could even look to recoup as much as the £73m they sold Rasmus Hojlund for last year.
