'Maybe': Anthony Gordon says £47m Man City player might be the best in the world

Anthony Gordon has suggested that Manchester City may have one of the best players in the world right now.

Having played for both Everton and Newcastle United, the winger has faced off against City on five occasions, the most recent being last weekend’s 2-0 FA Cup defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Now that the Magpies star is part of the England squad for their upcoming friendly matches against Brazil and Belgium, he has been sharing some hefty praise for one of the other members in the squad.

Speaking in a recent video shared on the England YouTube channel, Gordon had this to say when asked to pick a defensive option for his ideal England five-a-side team.

He said: “I’m going to go Stonsey, the best ball-playing centre-back in the world maybe. He’s so good.”

City sign the centre-back from fellow Premier League side Everton during the 2016 summer transfer window, paying over £47m to seal the deal.

Since then, the Englishman has made 251 appearances for the Citizens across all competitions, scoring 16 goals and supplying six assists along the way.

With Gordon mentioning Stones‘ ability to play the ball across the pitch from the defence, the centre-half ended the previous Premier League campaign with the joint-highest passing accuracy percentage (93%) in the City squad alongside Manuel Akanji.

Having also been deployed in a midfield role for the second half of City’s Treble-winning season, which has since carried over and evolved into this campaign, this further highlights how much of a useful and versatile player the England international has proven himself to be for Pep Guardiola.

In fact, Stones’ display in an attacking-midfield role in City’s 3-1 win over Manchester United earlier this month was heavily praised by Jamie Carragher.

Now that the Newcastle winger has shared his admiration for the City star, this shows how highly thought of he is from one of his league opponents and now current England teammate.
