Voting has ended in the first round of the presidential election in Slovakia on Saturday.

Some 4.4 million eligible voters were called on to choose a successor to President Zuzana Caputova from the nine men standing as candidates.

Advance polling said the clear favourites were Social Democrat parliamentary speaker Peter Pellegrini, part of the government camp, and former foreign minister and diplomat Ivan Korcok, backed by the liberal opposition.

They are widely expected to meet again in a run-off on April 6 if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote.

Partial results of the vote count are due to be published during the night, with the official final result expected by midday on Sunday at the latest.
