The Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in New York hosted a literary evening featuring Biljana Obradovic on Friday in Midtown.
Obradovic, a distinguished Serbian-American poet, translator, critic, and Professor of English at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, showcased her literary prowess at the event. Renowned for her insightful poetry, she has authored four collections including “Le Riche Monde,” “Frozen Embraces,” “Incognito,” and “Little Disruptions.” Her poetic brilliance also graces the pages of “Three Poets in New Orleans.”
Notably, Obradovic clinched the prestigious Rastko Petrovic award for her outstanding work “Frozen Embraces.” Her contributions to the literary world extend beyond her own poetry, as she has translated numerous collections into both English and Serbian. Collaborating with Dubravka Djuric, she co-edited “Cat Painters: An Anthology of Contemporary Serbian Poetry,” earning the esteemed Misha Djordjevic Award. Additionally, her role as a co-editor and primary translator for a Serbian poetry issue of Atlanta Review underscores her dedication to promoting Serbian literature globally.
Obradovic’s editorial ventures also include the compilation of essays in “Heavenly Muse: Essays on Poetry” by the late poet, Philip Dacey. Recently, her latest translations of Serbian Language poet Dubravka Djuric’s “The Politics of Hope (After the War): Selected and New Poems” were released in November 2023 by New York’s Roof Books, garnering acclaim.
The literary evening provided a platform to celebrate Biljana Obradovic’s remarkable contributions to poetry, translation, and academia, further strengthening cultural ties between Serbia and the United States.
