'It's personal stuff': 'Special' Liverpool player says he lost his head on international duty this week

There are a lot of Liverpool players on international duty this week. A total of 20 players who have been involved at first team level at some point this season have travelled to play games for their respective nations.

Rousing the Kop has already assembled all the matches they will be involved in which you can find by clicking here. Most thankfully will end their international break relatively early on Tuesday night, which means they will travel back to Liverpool and will have ample time to prepare to face Brighton on Sunday.

Most of them have continued to perform well while on international duty. Although there have been some frustrations as well. Among those who have both been frustrated and have played well so far has been Dominik Szoboszlai.

What Dominik Szoboszlai did for Hungary

As the captain of his country, Dominik Szoboszlai shoulders a lot of responsibility. Despite only being 23-years-old, he is Hungary’s leader and the country’s most important player. Earlier this week, Hungary were up against Turkey in an important international friendly to prepare for the European Championships later this year.

Szoboszlai’s team were playing in front of a sell-out crowd in the Puskas Arena, and were desperate to continue their unbeaten run, with Hungary not having lost since 2022. However, the game didn’t always go according to the plan.

Turkey are a good side, and they often frustrated Hungary and Szoboszlai. In the first half, Hungary created plenty of chances, but in the second it was Turkey, who surged forward and tried to create an opening.

In the end, though, Szoboszlai and Hungary got the win that they wanted when Hungary was awarded a penalty early on in the second half. The Liverpool midfielder stepped up and cooly converted from the spot.

Szoboszlai played the rest of the 90 minutes, and often dropped deep, dictating things from midfield for his country. This latest win means Hungary are still unbeaten since he has been named as captain of his country in the last 13 games.

But while Szoboszlai was pleased with the result, he was also spotted being annoyed at times on the pitch by reporters. Asked about why he was frustrated by M4 Sport, Szoboszlai replied that he did not want to reveal but admitted he did lose his head a ‘little bit.’

“It’s team stuff, personal stuff, I don’t really want to inform the outside world,” Szoboszlai said. “We didn’t approach things or we approached things [the way they wanted to] but things were not clicking [together]. I lost my head a little bit and had a few frustrations, but my teammates were there beside me and they helped me. Just like I help them. So, we did it [win the game] as a team once again.”

Szoboszlai’s words pretty much sum up just how important the national team is for the Hungarian. It also emphasises just how much of a serial winner the 23-year-old is. No wonder Alexis Mac Allister recently lauded him as a ‘special’ player.
