Liverpool should beat Real Madrid to sign lightning-quick defender, Klopp wanted him years ago - opinion

Liverpool will be without Jurgen Klopp for the first time in almost nine years this summer. It promises to be a strange transfer window ahead. If last year was chaotic with plenty of Klopp’s old guard leaving, this summer may follow a similar pattern.

After all, at the end of this season, it won’t just be Klopp leaving, but key members of his backroom staff as well. Including Pep Lijnders, Peter Krawietz and Vitor Matos who have been pivotal in Liverpool’s success behind the scenes.

But it might not just be coaches who are leaving. For some players this summer may also signal the end of their time at Anfield. For example, the likes of Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara have expiring contracts, and those deals are unlikely to be extended. Which means Liverpool will lose at least two experienced senior players.

Others may follow suit as well as new sporting director Richard Hughes and the returning Michael Edwards attempt to take Liverpool in a new direction following the post Klopp era.

Why Andy Robertson could leave Liverpool

Among those who could be axed from the Liverpool team by Edwards and Hughes is Andy Robertson. It feels like the Scotsman has declined in quality over the last couple of seasons. This season he has just one goal and one assist for Liverpool in all competitions – nowhere near the high standards he has set for himself over the course of his career.

Having turned 30-years-old, he is approaching a stage in a footballer’s career where a decline is inevitable. With two years left on his current deal, this summer might be the best opportunity for Liverpool to sell him for a high value.

Especially considering the Saudi Arabian market is exactly after players of Robertson’s ilk. Meanwhile, Liverpool can replace the left-back with a younger and more long-term candidate for his position. Someone who may also be on the move this summer.

Why Alphonso Davies is the perfect transfer target for Liverpool

Back when he was playing for Vancouver Whitecaps, Alphonso Davies was a player who Liverpool liked according to Rousing the Kop’s understand. However, in the end the Canadian ended-up moving to Bayern Munich instead.

There Davies has excelled over the last few seasons and has become one of the most talented left-backs alongside Andy Robertson in world football. He’s won the Champions League, competed in the World Cup and lifted several Bundesliga titles.

This summer Davies will have just one year left on his current deal at Bayern Munich, and it feels like he is ready to move on. Real Madrid are pursuing his services most actively at the moment. However, Liverpool are also thought to be interested, and if that interest is real Edwards and Hughes should do everything in their power to beat Real Madrid to his signature.

Davies with his quality on the flanks would be the perfect long-term candidate for Liverpool. He is still only 23-years-old and is lightning quick, and could play at an elite level at Anfield for years to come.
