Former Bayern Munich and Germany captain Lothar Matthäus believes that a return of coach Julian Nagelsmann to the Bundesliga champions would be a remarkable move.

Nagelsmann was axed by the former Bayern leadership 12 months ago and is now German national team coach on a contract until the end of the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany.

He has been linked with a return to Bayern who need a new helmsman when Thomas Tuchel leaves on June 30.

Nagelsmann, 36, has said he wants clarity about his future but has left it open whether that would be for club or country.

Matthäus said in his Sky TV column on Sunday: "It would be a big challenge for Julian to leave his mark with a national team era, but I assume that at his age he wants to work with a team on a daily basis and I think he has offers from clubs that are interested.

"I don't know if he's at the top of Bayern's list, but a return to Munich would be something very special.

"I already thought at the time that it was a mistake to let him go. For me, Nagelsmann was a good fit for Bayern Munich. Whether he does it again, albeit under different leaders and a different hierarchy, is up to him," Matthäus said.
