Aston Villa identify solution to ongoing set-piece issue as ‘aerial master’ is linked

Aston Villa may have found a potential solution to their ongoing set-piece issue as the club eyes Spanish international.

Much has gone right for Villa this season. In Unai Emery’s first full season at the club, Villa Park is on course to see Champions League football next season and lift its first major trophy in nearly 30 years.

Much of this can be put down to the performance of the first-team players. Ollie Watkins has been outstanding for Villa and could well win the Premier League Player of the Season.

Then, there is also Leon Bailey who might be the club’s most improved player so far this campaign.

However, one issue that has loomed over the club is set-pieces. The Birmingham outfit have been consistently unable to defend set pieces this season which has caused many issues.

However, with the summer transfer window approaching, the club have seemingly identified a potential transfer which could help to overcome this issue.

Now that the 2023/24 season is coming to an end, plans are starting to be put into place for the summer.

As a result, targets are being identified to try and help improve on this season’s success with Robin Le Normand now being linked.

According to Fichajes.net, Villa are one of many clubs including Arsenal and Inter Milan who are pursuing the centre-back.

Le Normand is a Spanish international with eight caps for his country since 2023 and has impressed at Real Sociedad this season.

Villa have been linked with the defender previously, but now look to be renewing their interest in the summer.

According to WhoScored, Le Normand is an aerial mastermind, excelling in winning duels. At the time of writing, he has averaged four aerial duels won per game in La Liga, the seventh highest in the division.

It is believed that the centre-half would be available for €40 million, which may well be a bargain in the current climate.

The main task for Villa and Emery in the summer is to ensure that the squad can improve for the 2024/25 campaign.

It will no doubt be a tough task with many of the teams around them such as Man United and Newcastle expected to improve.

However, with Le Normand, it seems the club has identified a potential solution to a major issue for Villa this season.

Set pieces have plagued the side defensively. This has caused many points to be dropped in the hunt for the Champions League which could hurt the side next season if they want to continue this success.

With Le Normand being an experienced defender at 27 years old and now a regular at international level, Villa have to pursue this target.

The Spaniard has also played in the Champions League throughout this season which could well help the squad next season if they were to reach the competition.
