Aston Villa 18-year-old shined on international stage yesterday, he'd have caught Emery's eye - opinion

Aston Villa will be thrilled to have secured the signature of academy jewel Rory Wilson, who could be a key part of Unai Emery’s future success at Villa Park.

Aston Villa are enjoying a host of success in the Premier League this season as Unai Emery’s side eye a Champions League finish.

The Villans have remained up with the best for the duration of the 2023/24 calendar, seeing them sit three points clear in fourth place ahead of top-four hopefuls Tottenham and Manchester United.

Not many would have believed that Villa would have been able to keep momentum after suffering three ACL injuries as well as a host of other key absences.

Emery has shown his adaptability throughout the course of the campaign to ensure the first team does well however, it’s not just been a strong season for the senior stars.

Rory Wilson has been impressive this season for club and country

Last night, Villa academy star Rory Wilson was in the headlines again, as he scored for Scotland U19 during their 3-2 defeat to Georgia in the U19 European Championship qualifiers.

The goal wasn’t enough to see his country win the game however, it represented another occasion that the teenager found himself on the scoresheet this season.

For club and country, Wilson has netted a mammoth 36 goals in 42 appearances, numbers that are superior to others in his age group but not so surprising for the 18-year-old striker.

Villa acquired the youngster from Rangers back in 2022, signing one of Scotland’s hottest talents based on his numbers from the 2021/22 season with Rangers’ academy.

The forward netted a phenomenal 49 goals that campaign, telling of how consistently lethal he’s been throughout his budding career so far.

What Rory Wilson could soon offer to Unai Emery

Branded as being “one of the best strikers at his age in Europe” by Scotland U17 coach Brian McLaughlin, Wilson could soon see his consistency rewarded at Villa Park.

This season, the 18-year-old has played for both the U18s and the U21s in the Premier League 2 where he has scored a combined 18 goals.

Still at a very young age, the 2006-born marvel could become a prominent figure for Emery sooner than some would think.

Villa haven’t had a problem in giving youngsters impressing at Bodymoor Heath a chance over the years, with stars such as Jack Grealish and Jacob Ramsey making their senior debuts at 18 and 17 years old respectively.

Given how consistent Wilson has been at academy level, Emery could soon be prompted to give the teenager a chance with the first team, particularly if the Villans are involved in Europe next season with a busy schedule expected.

All Wilson can do is keep scoring, which he doesn’t seem to have a problem in doing, making it abundantly clear that Villa signed a superstar in the making by securing his signature.
