‘Exceptional’ Tottenham player hints he could miss start of next season due to international commitments

A key Tottenham Hotspur player has now hinted that he could miss the start of next season owing to his international commitments.

It seems likely that Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy have already done a fair amount of planning for next season during this international break.

Tottenham haven’t exactly endured a busy schedule of late, but this period without any games has surely provided further chance to take stock and plan ahead.

It seems as if Postecoglou is very keen to get another centre-back through the door, someone to perhaps challenge for Micky van de Ven’s spot on the left, as Radu Dragusin seems to be intended to do on the right.

Cristian Romero’s spot doesn’t exactly seem under threat when all are fit, but Dragusin provides a similar skill-set if the Argentina international is ever missing.

That being said, Tottenham may have to cope with that scenario at the start of next season given what Romero has just said whilst away on international duty.

Romero was speaking with TyC Sports and admitted he would love to play in the summer Olympics.

Romero was asked if he would like to play in the Paris Olympics this summer and said he would definitely be available.

He explained: “I would like to be in the Olympic Games. I never had the chance to be there.

“Anything for the national team, obviously I would like to be there. If [Javier] Mascherano wants to take me, I am available.”

Of course, with the Olympics taking place at the end of July and start of August, that would interfere with Romero’s Tottenham preparation for next season.

Given the tournament is not recognised by FIFA, Spurs would have the power to block Romero from playing, but that is unlikely to be a decision that would be received too well.

So it remains to be seen if Romero is indeed called up as one of the over-23 players in the squad, but the ‘exceptional’ defender would definitely be a loss for Tottenham at the start of next campaign if so.

All that being said, Bayern Munich are now said to be interested in signing a centre-back who’s also being followed by Tottenham.
