'Oh my word': Micah Richards amazed by £15m midfielder who Tottenham reportedly want to sign

Pundit Micah Richards was left in awe of a midfielder recently linked with a Tottenham Hotspur move having watched him over the weekend.

There seems little doubt that Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy will be using this international break to sure up their plans for the coming summer, a crucial one for the club.

Tottenham are thought to be in a strong financial position right now, and Postecoglou is still only in the early stages of his squad rebuild.

In all honesty, the Spurs boss will probably want to add a new player in most positions, a summer that could be full of transition with players leaving the club too.

And should they qualify for the Champions League next season, which now looks likely, Postecoglou will demand a competitive squad.

That being said, having performed brilliantly against Spurs earlier in the season, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Joao Gomes was linked with a move to north London.

And after watching Gomes for Brazil against England on Saturday, Micah Richards was pretty blown away by the Tottenham linked man.

Micah Richards left blown away by Tottenham linked midfielder Joao Gomes

Richards was speaking on the ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast and admitted that he hadn’t seen Gomes for Wolves too often this season.

But having witnessed his passing and ball control for Brazil, Richards felt the need to issue an apology to Wolves fans.

He said: “We have to give a shout out to Gomes at Wolves, oh my word. What a player he is by the way.

“I didn’t have a team sheet or my glasses on so I was like who is that one and the producer John said, stop being daft you know who that is.

“And Gomes he is a player by the way. We don’t get to see Wolves too much on TV, but seeing him up close and personal.

“His touches, and seeing him when he wins the ball back, his weight of ball forward. Sorry Wolves fans, he is going to the top level.”

Joao Gomes would immediately improve Ange Postecoglou’s midfield

Of course, Gomes was playing in all Premier League midfield alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Lucas Paqueta – not an easy trio to stand out in.

And although Richards didn’t necessarily mention Gomes’ defensive work, the Tottenham linked midfielder did really shine.

According to Sofascore, Gomes won five duels, made three interceptions and also three tackles – impressive numbers when you are playing against the likes of Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham.

Clearly a player who is heading to the top, and someone who would definitely improve Postecoglou’s midfield.

Wolves would surely demand a big profit on the £15m they paid to buy Gomes from Flamengo, but at 23-years-old, the Brazilian could still present good value.

All that being said, it was revealed last night that a key Tottenham player may now miss the start of next season.
