‘Really good shout’…44-year-old manager has a big chance of landing the Liverpool job instead of Xabi Alonso

The wheels look like they are being put in motion when it comes to Liverpool’s pursuit of a new manager.

WithJurgen Klopp leaving in the summer, speculation continues to mount over who will be the next Liverpool boss.

The Reds have got both Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes in place now. Those two were seen as key appointments by FSG and now the quest for a new manager can really get going.

Of course, we know Xabi Alonso is being heavily linked. Franck Haise is also being looked at, while we also know Ruben Amorim has admirers at the club.

However, according to journalist Mark Ogden, another name could be top of Michael Edwards’ list right now. And that man is current Brighton gaffer, Roberto De Zerbi.

Michael Edwards could appoint Roberto De Zerbi as Liverpool manager

De Zerbi’s work in Brighton hasn’t gone unnoticed and he’s impressed a number of pundits and club officials along the way.

And according to ESPN journalist Mark Ogden, Michael Edwards could end up opting for De Zerbi over Xabi Alonso.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Roberto de Zerbi. I think De Zerbi ticks more boxes than Alonso apart from the fact Alonso is a club legend. Obviously Bayern Munich are strong and in for Alonso as well, they keep telling us. I think De Zerbi’s a really good shout for Liverpool even though I think he’s still second favourite behind Alonso at the moment,” he said.

44-year-old De Zerbi took over from Graham Potter at Brighton. Of course, he has a small link to Liverpool already, having got the best out of Alexis Mac Allister before he moved to Anfield.

De Zerbi’s football would excite Anfield

Following Jurgen Klopp is going to be hard work for anyone. That much is abundantly clear.

But, someone like Roberto De Zerbi would have as good a chance as anyone in succeeding. The style of play he’s brought to Brighton has been exciting to watch. Yes, they concede goals and get found out in certain games, but they are play a free-flowing, forward-thinking style of football.

The Anfield crowd will want to see someone come in and put this Liverpool side on the front foot.

From afar, you’d have to say De Zerbi would do that. The Italian, then, looks like he is one for Liverpool fans to keep an eye on in the next few months.
