'There aren't any' options: Without cash expert warns Trump he can't stop Letitia James

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JANUARY 11: Former U.S. President Donald Trump sits in the courtroom during his civil fraud trial at New York Supreme Court on January 11, 2024 in New York City.

Donald Trump has apparently been unable to secure a bond to hold off enforcement of his $454 million fraud judgment, and a legal expert said Monday his options look bleak.

The former president has filed notice that he would appeal the court order, but New York law requires defendants to put up 110 percent of the penalty to delay enforcement until the appeal process is completed, and MSNBC legal analyst Catherine Christian told "Morning Joe" that Trump had few options to do that after getting turned down by more than 30 lenders for that bond.

"There aren't any if Donald Trump doesn't come up with the bond or the cash," Christian said. "Now. Just Friday, I think he said he has $500 million, so if he doesn't put up that $500 million toward it, the attorney general has started the process in Westchester County, two big properties that Trump has, she'll start putting liens on his properties, finding out where his bank accounts are.

"It's long process, a legal process, but just last week she's made it clear she's starting the process."

The former president claimed in a Truth Social post on Friday that he had a half billion dollars in cash, which contradicts court filings made by his attorneys, but he told Fox News this weekend that he would not give up that money or his properties to "a rogue and incompetent judge."

The court set a deadline for Monday for Trump to post the bond after New York Attorney General Letitia James granted a 30-day grace period for him before she begins enforcement by seizing properties to satisfy the judgment.

She has filed paperwork in New York's Westchester County which legal onlookers have said starts the process for her to seize his Trump National Golf Club Westchester and Seven Springs estate.
