'He went supernova': Ian Wright says former England striker became incredible after leaving Arsenal

Ian Wright has claimed that a former England striker ‘went supernova’ after leaving his former club Arsenal.

Arsenal haven’t exactly been short of incredible attacking players over the years. The likes of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Robin van Persie remain among the best forwards we’ve seen in the Premier League era.

But on the odd occasion, Arsenal have allowed some talented players to slip through their fingers.

Indeed, Harry Kane was part of the Hale End Academy set up before joining Tottenham and has gone on to become one of the best strikers in world football.

Yet, looking even further back into the 1990s, Ian Wright has been talking about Andy Cole’s development after leaving Arsenal.

What Wright has said about former Arsenal striker Cole

Speaking on The Overlap, Wright raved about Cole and suggested that people at Arsenal didn’t expect him to develop into the striker he became.

“When I got there he went on loan to Fulham and Bristol and then he came back and people would say at Arsenal that he probably won’t score more than 12 goals a season the way he was and the way he played,” the Gunners legend said.

“To be fair to him when he was training, Andy Cole is how he is. But something clicked at Bristol and then you get him to Newcastle with Beardsley and all that lot and he turned into a monster, he went supernova.

“It comes down to what you were saying about people writing people off at that age.”

Andy Cole’s Arsenal career

Cole signed as a professional with Arsenal back in 1989 but made just one league appearance for the Gunners before leaving for Bristol Rovers in 1991.

His solo appearances came as a substitute in a 4-1 win at Highbury over Sheffield United.

Of course, the rest is history as the Englishman went on to scoop a Champions League and five Premier League titles after joining Manchester United in 1995.

Cole netted a total of 187 goals in 414 Premier League appearances during spells at Newcastle, Man United, Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City and Fulham.
