New star on The Bachelorette makes history after slamming 'ignorant' coverage

Jenn Tran’s ethnicity makes her the first Asian lead on The Bachelorette 2024. She was announced as the upcoming star of this year’s ABC dating season after lining up for Joey Graziadei.

For years, The Bachelorette‘s Jenn Tran has been defending the Asian community, calling out “ignorant” coverage across media in the past, such as when she wrote, “The lack of exposure directly correlates to the ignorance.”

Jenn Tran’s ethnicity

Jenn Tran’s ethnicity is Asian American, with Vietnamese roots. When she joined The Bachelor with Joey Graziadei as lead, she was most excited to teach him about her family’s ethnic background.

The new 26-year-old lead currently lives in Miami and prides herself on being bilingual. On becoming the first Asian American Bachelorette, Tran said: “It’s honestly incredible and I feel so, so grateful.”

She feels “so honored to be the first Asian Bachelorette in this franchise,” adding on The Bachelor finale, “Growing up, I’ve always wanted to see Asian representation on TV. I feel like it was really sparse.”

Jenn is making history as The Bachelor nation’s first Asian lead. She said, “Anytime Asians were in the media it was to fill a supporting character role, to fulfil some sort of stereotype.”

“I always felt boxed in by that because I was like, I don’t see myself on screen. I don’t see myself as a main character,” she continued. When she’s not studying, Tran loves reading, paddle boarding and traveling.

She slammed ‘ignorant’ coverage

Jenn has spoken out about media posting pictures of women who clearly don’t look like her in the past. She told her Instagram followers: “Let’s continue to take accountability, learn from others and lead with love always.”

She once ended up calling out “ignorant” coverage in the past, such as when she wrote on social media about less Asian representation, “The lack of exposure directly correlates to the ignorance.”

The ABC star recently said she’s “just happy to be here” when highlighting diversity and inclusion, and has volunteered with organizations that address “food insecurity within disadvantaged communities.”
