Since 2015, Ukraine has celebrated this holiday annually on March 26. But the National Guard actually has two birthdays. Nov. 4, which was established back in 1993 to commemorate the second anniversary of the Law on the National Guard, and March 26, which until 2015 was the Day of the Internal Troops.

In March 2015, President Petro Poroshenko issued a decree introducing the holiday "taking into account the importance and role of the National Guard of Ukraine in fulfilling the tasks of ensuring state security and defense of the state, protection and defense of life, rights, freedoms and legitimate interests of citizens, society and the state from criminal and other unlawful encroachments, and protection of public order."
