Russian defense plants are unable to produce the planned quantity of drones due to European Union sanctions, reports the National Resistance Center (NRC).
According to NRC, the Russian enterprise Izhmash - Unmanned Systems failed to fulfill a state order for the production of the Granat-4 complex due to the absence of European components.
The Russian Ministry of Defense concluded a contract with the plant for the production of new complexes in the summer of 2023, but in October, the plant, based on an independent assessment from the Udmurt Chamber of Commerce and Industry, reported that it could not fulfill the order due to sanctions and the lack of components from the EU.
Sanctions against Russia by the EU
Since the onset of the full-scale invasion, the European Union has regularly imposed sanctions against Russia for its aggressive war against Ukraine. Restrictions are imposed on Russian officials, oligarchs, economic sectors, companies, and defense enterprises of the aggressor.
On February 23, 2024, the EU adopted the 13th package of sanctions against Russia. The European Council decided to introduce restrictive measures against another 106 individuals and 88 legal entities.
Additionally, on December 11, 2023, the European Union imposed sanctions on several individuals and legal entities involved in the development and production of unmanned aerial vehicles by Iran, which Russia uses against Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also called for stronger sanctions against Russia. According to him, the aeroballistic missiles Kinzhal, which Russia uses to shell Ukraine, contain dozens of foreign components.
