RuPaul may be glam but his parents are regular members of society doing average jobs

RuPaul’s parents’ jobs are a far cry different from his. A world away from the Drag Race stage, the TV personality and presenter has recently stepped down as host – with a huge net worth to his name.

He created RuPaul’s Drag Race and went on to make millions for his fame, but if he’d not taken that route and followed in his mom and dad’s footsteps, the iconic queen would be making a lot less.

RuPaul’s parent’s jobs are totally different

RuPaul‘s late father was an electrician, while his mom worked as a counsellor. The host’s dad, Irving Charles, is working as an electrician in California, where the average wage is $73,046 (£57,148).

His late mom, Ernestine “Toni” Fontenette, divorced his father in 1967, years before she died in 1993 and his father passed in 2012. He was named by his mom, as “Ru” came from roux, a French term for gumbo.

If he’d let go of the fame route and followed in his dad’s footsteps, he’d certainly be earning less of a wage than he does today. Even so, he’d be earning more than Elon Musk and Travis Kelce’s parents!

Inside Drag Race ex-host’s net worth

RuPaul has a whopping $60 million to his name. It started in the early 1990s, when RuPaul landed a record contract and released his first album, Supermodel of the World, while starting a career in acting.

A few years earlier in 1987, he had moved to New York City and began his career in go-go bars and on television – on The Gong Show and MTV. Before that, RuPaul worked at Atlanta’s famed Plaza Theatre.

One particularly notable first gig of RuPaul’s when he was a dancer in drag in the music video for the classic song, Love Shack. Now, an example fee to book RuPaul starts at $150K – minimum!

Someone who has always supported Ru has been with his husband, Georges LeBar, since 1994, when the pair met at a New York City club. They dated for 23 years before marrying on their 2017 anniversary.

RuPaul steps down as show host

RuPaul recently announced he was stepping down as Drag Race Down Under’s host. His best friend, Michelle Visage, is replacing his role on season 4 – with Mama Ru’s blessing, of course!

He will be going on his book tour throughout filming while the Australian version of his hit show plays out. Reflecting on how he manifested his success, RuPaul revealed it was the LA billboards.

“In the ‘70s, my family knew how much I loved the brilliant billboards that lined the Sunset Strip. When we drove up to LA, they would drop me off on the corner of Fairfax and Sunset Boulevard,” he said,

“And for hours, I’d walk up and down the Strip, captivated by the dazzling billboards featuring icons like Cher, Donna Summer, and Diana Ross,” RuPaul continued in January.
