Recent Sol Brynn claim could be seriously bad news for one Middlesbrough star this summer - opinion

Middlesbrough have a number of exciting prospects out on loan right now.

One of those who is currently impressing elsewhere in the Football League, is Sol Brynn.

The goalkeeper is currently on loan in League One with Leyton Orient. That follows an impressive spell with League Two side Swindon Town last season.

However, it seems as though the 23-year-old still has his eyes on making it as a Middlesbrough player, once he returns to The Riverside Stadium in the summer.

Sol Brynn keen to make his mark at Middlesbrough

After a number of spells out on loan elsewhere, it seems Brynn is now keen to establish himself at The Riverside Stadium.

Speaking recently, the goalkeeper’s agent, Ian Harte, claimed that the 23-year-old is keen to challenge for a spot as first chice between the posts for Middlesbrough next season.

Describing him as a ‘top’ option in that role, Harte also suggested that Brynn has the ability to play in the Premier League in the future.

That though, could turn out to be rather bad news for another player currently on the books at Middlesbrough.

Jamie Jones facing contract uncertainty

While Brynn was one of several goalkeepers to leave Middlesbrough on loan in the summer, there were a number of other to join the club.

One of those was Jamie Jones, who signed on a free transfer, following the expiration of his contract with Wigan Athletic.

The 35-year-old though, has since yet to make a single appearance for Michael Carrick’s side.

Instead, he has spent the campaign behind two other summer signings, Seny Dieng and Tom Glover, in the pecking order between the posts.

Unlike those two, Jones is not contracted to Middlesbrough beyond the end of this season, and these claims around Brynn now may now raise further questions over his future.

At 23 years old, Brynn is at the opposite end of his career to Jones. As a result, the fact he evidently wants to stay at The Riverside Stadium, means he may be a more appealing option for Carrick to turn to.

With so much longer remaining in his career, Brynn is someone who Middlesbrough may be able to benefit from for longer than they would with Jones.

Indeed, the current Leyton Orient goalkeeper still has two years remaining on his contract with parent club ‘Boro.

That therefore gives him more security than Jones at The Riverside. Beyond that, these Premier League predictions, and the fact that at his age he has plenty of time to develop, mean he is likely to be more valuable than a player such as Jones, who is at the latter stages of his career.

Because of that, it would also make more sense to give these opportunities to Brynn by integrating him into the first-team, in the hope he may be able bring some sizeable funds to the club in the future.

If that does see him join Dieng and Glover in the pecking order, it is unlikely that Middlesbrough would need a fourth goalkeeper to rely on as well.

Considering his expiring contract and lack of game time this season, Jones could therefore be the obvious fall guy in this scenario.
