'Was just everywhere': Nation's media say Tottenham 30-year-old was his country's 'star man' on Tuesday

It was a dismal night for Wales in the end as Leeds United ace Dan James missed a decisive penalty that saw Poland qualify for Euro 2024 – despite the best efforts of Tottenham defender Ben Davies.

Wales had to beat Robert Lewandowski’s Poland to qualify for this summer’s group stages, but the two nations could not be separated aftwe 120 minutes of football at The Cardiff City Stadium last night.

The game went to penalties, with Davies – captaining Wales for the night – blasting his penalty into the back of the net, having helped keep Barcelona’s Lewandowski quiet. But, James missed his spot kick.

His effort saved by Wojciech Szczesny, despite it being a decent-enough strike of the ball from 12 yards. Wales go crashing out and Davies suddenly has plenty of free time this summer, instead of a plane ticket.

Welsh media blown away by Tottenham star Ben Davies last night

It was a closely-fought affair despite Wales boasting home advantage, with both sides creating decent chances on the night. But, so curelly, it was James that missed his penalty and Wales go crashing out.

Davies, 30, won his 87th cap for his country last night – and was excellent on the left side of a back three adopted by manager Rob Page. Davies also saw a goal ruled offside, as both sides toiled for a winner.

His long-term future at Tottenham may be in doubt with his deal ending in June 2025, but his position in the Wales side is undisputed. Wales Online handed him a 9/10 rating and described him as their star man.

“Won more than his fair share of duels and beat Lewandowski in the air a few times. Was unlucky to see a headed goal of his ruled out for offside. Was just everywhere. Netted his penalty, too,” Wales Online said.

Tottenham have got to offer Davies a new deal to keep him

No, he is not good enough to start in Ange Postecoglou’s side. Destiny Udogie is first choice on the left of the Aussia manager’s back four – while Micky van de Ven is one of Tottenham’s best, at centre-back.

Leeds are supposedly admirers of Davies. A move to Elland Road could possibly present Premier League football, if the Whites remain in first place with eight Championship games left to play during 2023-24.

Earning praise from Gary Lineker of late, Davies still has plenty to offer judging by his display on Tuesday night and Spurs cannot pass that up. He offers versatility, and allows Ange to change into a back three.

Davies may feel this summer is the time to move on. Leeds boast a few of his Wales teammates – in the likes of Ethan Ampadu, Connor Roberts, Joe Rodon and James. But, Spurs have got to try and keep him.
